I mean, yes this is a fair point - however visibility is the key point to what makes Jason Collins’s coming out so monumental. There are indeed many openly queer and trans* athletes already in the sporting world, but statistically most Americans - both male and female - primarily follow male major league sports teams. The visibility and potential impact of Jason Collins’s coming out is such that millions of people who are invested in his team must now actively recognize and potentially accept/reject his sexuality. In the ongoing effort to challenge people’s entrenched homophobia and transphobia, a high-profile affront to a large audience’s assumptions is another important stepping stone.
